This is an empirical phenomenological interview study into the experiences of professional actors as they create and perform roles for the stage. Prior research was inadequate for capturing actors’ changing life worlds over time. Analyzing the interviews using the descriptive phenomenological method yielded general structural descriptions and pointed to the relevance of Schütz’s description of multiple realities. Being cast in a role changes the pace and goals of actors’ everyday worlds and leads the actors intermittently and with intention to enter (...) other realities—fictional, theoretical, and/or pictorial. A province unique to acting is the drama world in which the actors live incarnate as their characters. The drama world is infused pre-reflectively with discoveries from other provinces of meaning, unfolds spontaneously, and, in performance, has the audience as horizon. The drama world and the experiences that give rise to it provide new material for comparative phenomenological analysis of various forms of imagining. (shrink)

The inconsistency between pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours, known as the “attitude-behaviour” gap, is exceptionally pronounced in scenarios associated with “green” choice. The current literature offers numerous explanations for the reasons behind the “attitude-behaviour” gap, however, the generalisability of these explanations is complex. In addition, the answer to the question of whether the gap occurs between attitudes and intentions, or intentions and behaviours is also unknown. In this study, we propose the moral dimension as a generalisable driver of the “attitude-behaviour” gap (...) and investigate its effectiveness in predicting attitudes, pro-environmental intentions and subsequent behaviours. We do so by using Hunt–Vitell’s moral philosophy-based framework of ethical decision-making, which conceptualises morality as the central decision-making parameter. The results from 557 US MTurk participants revealed that the manipulation of moral dimensions, specifically deontology and teleology, impacted ethical evaluation of presented dilemmas, however, failed to translate into subsequent intentions and behaviours. This finding suggests (i) that the moral dimension has an effect in shaping attitudes toward environmental issues, and (ii) that gap occurs between attitudes and intentions rather than intentions and behaviours. Further investigation of what strengthens and/or overrides the effects of the moral dimension would help understand the reasons why moral attitudes do not always translate into subsequent intentions and behaviours in the pro-environmental domain. Background People who are at elevated risk of suicide stand to benefit from internet-based interventions; however, research in this area is likely impacted by a range of ethical and practical challenges. The aim of this study was to examine the ethical issues and practical barriers associated with clinical studies of internet-based interventions for suicide prevention. Method This was a mixed-methods study involving two phases. First, a systematic search was conducted to identify studies evaluating internet-based interventions for people at risk of (...) suicide, and information pertaining to safety protocols and exclusion criteria was extracted. Second, investigators on the included studies were invited to complete an online survey comprising open-ended and forced-choice responses. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used to analyse the data. Results The literature search identified 18 eligible studies, of which three excluded participants based on severity of suicide risk. Half of the 15 suicide researchers who participated in the survey had experienced problems obtaining ethics approval, and none had encountered adverse events attributed to their intervention. Survey respondents noted the difficulty of managing risk in online environments and the limitations associated with implementing safety protocols, although some also reported increased confidence resulting from the ethical review process. Respondents recommended researchers pursue a collaborative relationship with their research ethics committees. Conclusion There is a balance to be achieved between the need to minimise the risk of adverse events whilst also ensuring interventions are being validated on populations who may be most likely to use and benefit from them. Further research is required to obtain the views of research ethics committees and research participants on these issues. Dialogue between researchers and ethics committees is necessary to address the need to ensure safety while also advancing the timely development of effective interventions in this critical area. While vaccination rates in the United States are high — generally over 90 percent — rates of exemptions have been going up, and preventable diseases coming back. Aside from their human cost and the financial cost of treatment imposed on those who become ill, outbreaks impose financial costs on an already burdened public health system, diverting resources from other areas. This article examines the financial costs of non-vaccination, showing how high they can be and what they include. It makes a (...) case for requiring those who do not vaccinate to cover the costs of outbreak caused by their choice. Such recouping is justified because the choice not to vaccinate can easily be seen as negligent. But even if it is not, that choice involves imposing costs on others, and there are good reasons to require the actors to internalize those costs. The article proposes alternative statutory and regulatory schemes to cover the costs imposed on the public purse, focusing on no-fault mechanisms. We consider both ex ante mechanisms like a tax or a fee that will go into a no-fault fund to cover the costs and ex post mechanisms like a statutory authorization for recoupment of those costs by health officials. Nurses’ experiences in, and the overall effectiveness of, widely used alternative‐to‐discipline programs to manage nurses’ substance‐use problems have not been adequately scrutinized. We uncovered the conflicted official and experiential ways of knowing one such alternative‐to‐discipline program in a Canadian province. We explicated this conflict through an institutional ethnography analysis. Ethnographic data from interviews with 12 nurses who were enrolled in an alternative‐to‐discipline treatment program and three program administrators, as well as institutional texts, were analyzed to explore how institutional practices and (...) power relations co‐ordinated and managed nurses’ experiences. Analysis revealed the acritical acceptance of a standardized program not based on current norms of practice. Potential and actual conflicts of interest, power imbalances, and prevailing corporate interests were rife. Nurses were not afforded the same rights to quality ethical health care as other citizens. ‘Expert’ physicians’ knowledge was privileged while nurses’ knowledge was subordinated. Conclusions were that regulatory bodies cannot rely on the taken‐for‐granted standardized treatment model in widespread use. Individualized treatment alternatives reflecting current, scientific evidence must be offered to nurses, and nurses’ knowledge, expertise, and experiences need to be included in decision‐making processes in these programs. À travers l'étude d'un document programmatique exceptionnel et original, dont l'auteur et la date de rédaction demeurent inconnus, les Advertências para a provincia do Brasil, on analyse l'inscription de l'entreprise missionnaire dans sa double dimension économicopolitique, avec l'engagement dans la production sucrière, et spirituelle, assurer (...) le salut du missionnaire et la conversion des Indiens. Ce projet, qui fait de l'a ldeia la structure déterminante de la présence et de l'action jésuites en terre de Brésil, révèle une vision globale de la mission, à la fois géopolitique, économique et religieuse que l'historiographie traditionnelle a occultée au profit d'une approche exclusivement spirituelle. We assume that what ought to be meant by ‘speech’, in the context ‘free speech’, is whatever it is that a correct justification of the right to free speech justifies one in protecting. And we argue that what one ought to mean includes illocution, in the sense of J.L. Austin.

Coral bleaching has impacted reefs worldwide and the predictions of near‐annual bleaching from over two decades ago have now been realized. While technology currently provides the means to predict large‐scale bleaching, predicting reef‐scale and within‐reef patterns in real‐time for all reef users is limited. In 2020, heat stress across the Great Barrier Reef underpinned the region's third bleaching event in 5 years. Here we review the heterogeneous emergence of bleaching across Heron Island reef habitats and discuss the oceanographic drivers that (...) underpinned variable bleaching emergence. We do so as a case study to highlight how reef end‐user groups who engage with coral reefs in different ways require targeted guidance for how, and when, to alter their use of coral reefs in response to bleaching events. Our case study of coral bleaching emergence demonstrates how within‐reef scale nowcasting of coral bleaching could aid the development of accessible and equitable bleaching response strategies on coral reefs. Dans un contexte d'enchevêtrement des systèmes normatifs et de pluralisme juridictionnel, la question de l'autorité de la jurisprudence est centrale. Tantôt abordée comme un instrument normatif, tantôt comme une donnée purement factuelle, elle est toujours une variable inconstante. Entre la thèse de "l'autorité de la chose interprétée" et le concept de "dialogue des juges", il est difficile de parvenir à une conception unanime de l'influence que produit la jurisprudence. La thèse défendue systématise cet effet en limitant l'analyse à ce que (...) prescrivent les énoncés normatifs en vigueur. Partant du principe de déterminisme textuel, les juridictions sont prioritairement contraintes par les énoncés dispositionnels dont elles doivent faire application. Une part d'indétermination résulte néanmoins des spécificités de chaque contentieux, attachées aux questions litigieuses dont les juridictions sont saisies. La systématisation de l'effet que produit la jurisprudence repose sur deux critères essentiels : les normes et leurs modalités d'application. Sur ces fondements, la thèse propose de démontrer que la jurisprudence a valeur de preuve. La présence des deux critères susmentionnés conditionne les relations que les juridictions entretiennent. La jurisprudence produit ainsi un effet corroboratif. Ce dernier désigne le processus factuel par lequel l'interprétation délivrée par une juridiction est utilisée à des fins probatoires par une autre juridiction, en raison de l'analogie qu'elle établit. Le critère de l'analogie, entendu comme la "ressemblance de rapports" normatifs et factuels existant entre deux ou plusieurs litiges, constitue le lien essentiel à la réalisation des relations jurisprudentielles. L'étude s'attache à illustrer ce processus dans les rapports d'influence interprétative qu'entretiennent cinq juridictions : la Cour de justice, la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme, le Conseil constitutionnel français, la Cour de cassation et le Conseil d'Etat. L'effet corroboratif de la jurisprudence fournit une grille de lecture des relations jurisprudentielles, excluant toutes considérations extra-juridiques. (shrink)

Randomised placebo-controlled trials (RPCTs) are the gold standard for evaluating novel treatments. However, this design is rarely used in the context of orthopaedic interventions where participants are assigned to a real or placebo surgery. The present study examines attitudes towards RPCTs for orthopaedic surgery among 687 orthopaedic surgeons across the USA. When presented with a vignette describing an RPCT for orthopaedic surgery, 52.3% of participants viewed it as ‘completely’ or ‘mostly’ unethical. Participants were also asked to rank-order the value of (...) five different types of evidence supporting the efficacy of a surgery, ranging from RPCT to an anecdotal report. Responses regarding RPCTs were polarised with 26.4% viewing it as the least valuable (even less valuable than an anecdote) and 35.7.% viewing it as the most valuable. Where equipoise exists, if we want to subject orthopaedic surgeries to the highest standard of evidence (RPCTs) before they are implemented in clinical practice, it will be necessary to educate physicians on the value and ethics of placebo surgery control conditions. Otherwise, invasive procedures may be performed without any benefits beyond possible placebo effects. (shrink)

The aim of the article is to illustrate concrete problems in the asymmetrical nurse–patient power relationship. It is an ethical demand that the nurse is faced with the challenges that the power in the relation is administered so that the patient's room for action is expanded and trust maintained. It is an essential message in care philosophy, but in clinical practice, success is not always achievable. A hidden and more or less unconscious restriction of the patient's room for action may (...) result in the excesses of care. Three selected aspects: dependence, trust, and power described by the Danish philosopher K.E. Løgstrup and the Norwegian nursing philosopher Kari Martinsen's care philosophy has inspired this empirically based examination of some current barriers in the asymmetrical nurse–patient relationship. On the basis of qualitative interviews with six patients and six nurses, the research thus provides an identifying and problem‐exploratory examination of some current obstacles in which the handling of trust and power reflects the excesses of care. The findings develop three themes. ‘Being a burden’ acknowledges that the balance of power will always tip to the nurse's advantage. The second theme, ‘Doing only what's absolutely necessary’, shows how a fixation with ‘technicalism’ creates a distance between people that may constrain the patient's room for action. The last theme is concerning the nurse's ability to navigate between closeness and distance is essential in avoiding ‘the excesses of care’, paternalism, and overprotectiveness. A situation in which distance takes the upper hand and care turns into paternalism. A different situation would arise if the nurse's emotions became sentimental or intimate with the result that closeness gets the upper hand. To avoid a harmful exercise of power and the excesses of care, the findings have demonstrated that a relationship‐based caring is a demand for situation‐specific sensitive attention skills. (shrink)

Le philosophe populaire berlinois Johann Jakob Engel a amorcé, à la fin du XVIII siècle, des recherches importantes dans le domaine de la sémiotique esthétique, problématique alors presque entièrement neuve que venait de lancer le Laocoon de Lessing. A peine quelque années plus tard, l’œuvre de Engel constitue déjà un élargissement considérable de la problématique lessingienne, tout autant d’ailleurs qu’une remise en cause de certaines de ses prémisses : la sémiotique théâtrale ne peut-elle constituer une alternative à la scission sémiotique (...) des « arts du temps » et des « arts de l’espace » ? Plus spécifiquement, l’analyse sémiotique du geste sera pour Engel l’occasion de dégager deux notions singulièrement opératoires : « peinture » et « expression » (Malerei, Ausdruck) qui seront transposables dans une sémiotique esthétique générale. En effet, elles permettent à Engel est de dégager analogies fortes entre musique, poétique, gestuel, pour s’acheminer vers une sémiotique comparée dont la perspective est entièrement neuve. On en retracera les ressorts essentiels en mettant en lumière le rôle intermédiaire important dévolu d’une part au modèle rhétorique de l’éloquence, d’autre part à la fonction métaphorique – moteurs de la transposition d’une sémiotique du langage à celle d’un « langage du geste ». This volume seeks to establish the background debate of Aristotle with his former teacher, one often depicted as adversarial but that created a dialectical character in which Aristotle built the cardinal notions of his ethical philosophy as responses to specific questions left open in Platos work. Cette evidence gagne neanmoins a etre (...) rappelee pour en degager toute la portee, plus particulierement dans le domaine de l'ethique ou le rapport d'Aristote a son maitre tend a etre reduit a la vision traditionnelle d'un disciple devenu un adversaire irreductible, et parfois injuste. Redonner voix au dialogue continu mais souterrain entre les ethiques des deux philosophes, en mettant au jour l'arriere-plan platonicien avec lequel Aristote est en debat, n'a pas pour seul but de reevaluer l'heritage platonicien du Stagirite. Une telle entreprise offre en meme temps une voie d'entree feconde dans l'elaboration de ses concepts ethiques, qu'il s'agisse du bonheur, du plaisir, de l'amitie ou de la sagesse pratique. En effet, faire l'hypothese qu'Aristote construit les notions cardinales de sa philosophie pratique comme des reponses precises a des questions non moins precises laissees ouvertes par les Dialogues permet d'en eclairer la genese et d'en degager les articulations constitutives. Bien loin d'etre un systeme statique de concepts, l'ethique aristotelicienne se trouve ainsi heriter du caractere dialectique plus volontiers attribue aux textes platoniciens qui enconstituent la toile de fond. La nouveaute comme la portee de l'intuition qui la guide, a savoir que le bien, pour les humains, reside dans l'action, s'apprecient mieux a l'aune de cette conversation continuee qu'elle entretient avec les questions et les prises de position de son predecesseur. Résumé — L’intérêt des philosophes pour Lessing n’est peut-être jamais aussi intense et légitime que lorsqu’il se porte à considérer sa conception même de la philosophie. Du théorique au pratique ou, plus exactement, de la scission du théorique et du pratique dans le métaphysique à leur harmonie dans le modèle philosophique de la sagesse, la légitimité philosophique conçue par Lessing semble d’abord nous emmener vers une déconsidération principielle de toute philosophie comme simple métaphysique, au profit d’une philosophie dont le seul (...) sens serait alors de devenir philosophie pratique. Cependant, on peut alors se poser la question de savoir si la façon dont Lessing fait de la philosophie correspond à ce qu’il en dit : n’est-il pas alors surprenant de constater chez Lessing l’absence d’une telle philosophie pratique comme théorie des mœurs – et, au contraire, la troublante persistance d’échos métaphysiques ?Zusammenfassung — Das Interesse, das die Philosophen Lessing entgegenbringen, scheint um so stärker und berechtigter zu sein, als es seiner Auffassung der Philosophie selbst gilt. Besteht jedoch nicht ein Widerspruch zwischen diesen beiden Pünkten : die Philosophie, wie sie bei Lessing tatsächlich anwesend ist, und was er sagt davon ? Es kann nämlich sonderbar erscheinen, da eine solche Philosophie bei Lessing keineswegs die Form einer Sittenlehre annimmt, sich vielmehr weiterhin durch das verwirrend Vorhandensein metaphysicher Echoen auszeichnet. En comparant les vues de Xénophon et de Platon sur la question délicate de l’oikos, nous espérons dégager certains éléments fondamentaux quant à leurs conceptions respectives de la nature des femmes et de leur rôle à jouer dans la société. Alors qu’homme et femme se révèlent tous deux indispensables à une bonne gestion de l’oikos chez Xénophon en vertu de leur complémentarité, l’oikos sera aboli dans la cité idéale élaborée par Platon afin de permettre aux meilleurs hommes comme aux meilleures (...) femmes de se consacrer entièrement au gouvernement.
